Just under the radar, Hopsin instigates and incites a seismic level of excitement and enthusiasm. Since his emergence in 2007, the Panorama City, CA rapper, producer, director, editor, and actor has notched two RIAA gold records—“Sag My Pants” (2010) and “Ill Mind of Hopsin 5” (2012)—and amassed nearly 400 million YouTube views, while averaging 1 million-plus Spotify streams monthly and consistently selling out shows all over the globe. He earned the coveted title of XXL Freshmen in addition to receiving ink from Complex, Rolling Stone, The Source, Vibe, and many more. Following a streak of cult favorite independent albums such as Raw (2010) and Knock Madness (2013), his fourth full-length, Pound Syndrome, bowed at #17 on the Billboard Top 200, moving 17,000 copies in its first week during 2015. However, 2016 would mark the beginning of his biggest chapter yet, leaving the label he co-founded Funk Volume and launching his own Undercover Prodigy.
In conjunction with the label’s introduction, he embarked on his biggest headline tour yet, the Savageville Tour. Packing rooms across the country and boasting explosive production, fans already began showing up with Undercover Prodigy tattoos. The name would speak to his movement.
“I look like everybody else, but I’m not everybody else,” he grins. “It’s like I have this talent nobody knows about. You may see me, you might not think there’s much to it, but there is a fucking goldmine in this brain. I know a lot of people can relate. That’s why it’s called Undercover Prodigy.”
Hopsin kicked off this next phase with a bang, releasing “Ill Mind of Hopsin 8” in early 2016 and continuing the now iconic song series. Over ominous production, he spits inimitable, impenetrable, and impressive bars aimed right at his old business partner, formally announcing the commencement of a new era. In less than six months, the track racked up over 11 million Spotify streams.
